Job Hunting

This post is a little more chatty than usual so I'd like to apologise in advance if none of this makes sense!

At the moment I'm currently unemployed. I had a temporary Christmas retail job which unfortunately I didn't get kept on at so I'm on the hunt for something else. The thing is, it's so hard to find a job these days! Now, I know I'm not really in a position to be too fussy about where I work but I'm looking to branch out of retail yet it's a very hard thing to do. I'd love to have a nice office job, have my own desk with a computer and telephone and interact with people using these methods. A typical "9 to 5" job if you will. It just seems that these types of jobs all require some form of experience. Whether it's certain qualifications ie a degree, or having worked for a similar company before, there's little chance of anyone with a retail background like mine to get hired. Now, I know it does happen but very rarely. Training would be good, yet very few companies offer this. It's time consuming and if they can hire someone who already has the skills, why bother offering any form of training?

When I was in school and had to think about what I wanted to do as a career, I always came up with journalism. It sounded great- writing for a magazine, working in that office style environment, always busy. Then I changed my mind. Biggest mistake ever. Now I regret not studying towards that goal as it's one of the toughest markets to break into without qualifications or experience.

I'm completely at a loss about what I can do and it's really starting to get me down lately. I've applied for quite a few jobs but so far I've had no responses back. I may not have the right qualifications but when it comes to other aspects (confidence, good telephone manner, IT literate etc) I'm doing quite well. I guess I just need to keep trying and see what happens.

  1. I'm a bit in this situation too; I'm studying art which is a very competitive area for jobs! Maybe you could mention your blog in your CV - would definitely count a lot :D Best of luck with your journey! x

  2. I wish you all the best in finding a job. All I would really say is to keep going. It took me around a year to land my boring 9 to 5 office job and a LOT of CV sending and a few awful interviews. I'm only aiming to do this until I can save up enough money to start Counselling training. Have you tried looking at internships or asking companies if they do work experience that you could try for a month without pay just to gain some experience? I realise doing this can be extremely hard as we all obviously need money to live but I've found that company's are always grateful for extra help - especially if it's free so they are more than willing to give you the experience.

Other than applying for vacancies, I'd say you should write to companies that aren't currently advertising. Write to anywhere you can find - solicitors offices, small cleaning companies, your local newspaper. Anything and everything. Show that you are willing to work hard and ask them what it would take to get a job in their company.

    Good luck!!
